About Me
Mexican Canadian artist known for her contemporary realistic portraits
Ari de la Mora - PAINTER
Self Taught Artist
“I paint women’s life stories; using a rich color palette, the female gaze, and a magic realism style, I portray the scope of beauty that can be found in diversity, I want my paintings to look back at the viewer, to be the storytellers of particular and different stories some of them nostalgic or even a little bit bizarre but visceral and honest so the viewer may find herself in it.”

SOME WORDS
Statemen
One of the pivotal elements in my work resides in the multiculturalism that we the people can bring to the cultural diaspora.
My experience as a visual artist and as a Mexican immigrant woman building a life in Canada is the inspiration of my work, which addresses topics of representation, cultural reclaiming, immigrant women’s visibility and our relationship with the land. I am a figurative painter who is strongly influenced by cultural themes, that is the reason why my work relies on the depiction of traditional uses and costumes like face painting and symbolism.
I paint women’s life stories; using a rich color palette, the female gaze, and a magic realism style, I portray the scope of beauty that can be found in diversity, challenging the preconceived perception of what a minority group may look like. I want my paintings to look back at the viewer, to be the storytellers of particular and different stories, some of them nostalgic or even a little bit bizarre but visceral and honest so the viewer may find herself in it.”
My work aims to provoke reactions that generate conversations about belonging and identity and in doing so contributing to the Canadian cultural landscape.
